Many a video game has inspired an aspiring developer to make their own. But it's rare to have an original piece of work taken over by the creator of the original game.

Thiswas, however, the case for Brendan Malcolm, the one-man team at Australian creator Games By Malcs, whose idle RPG Melvor Idle has been published by Jagex who is the creator of RuneScape which is a game that was core to Malcolm's motivation for his own game.

Melvor Idle strips away the graphics and 3D environments of RuneScape as well as other MMOs and distills it down to a menu-based idle which lets players manage their inventory, skills and quests. Activating combat encounters with a winning streak earns players XP and loot which is then invested into whichever upgrade tree players want, while doing repetitive activities like crafting or woodcutting yields the same benefits.

Malcolm has been playing RuneScape from the age of ten, and has also dabbled in many of the leading idle games, including Clicker Heroes, Cookie Clicker and NGU Idle. Although he liked them, he felt it could be doing something more pleasing in gold runescape a similar manner to Jagex's flagship RPG.
